Welcome to Our FAQ

At Vet Nurse Behaviourist, we understand that raising a happy, confident puppy can sometimes feel overwhelming. As a qualified Veterinary Nurse and Clinical Animal Behaviourist in training, I combine medical knowledge with evidence-based, reward-focused training to help you and your puppy build the best start together. Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about our puppy classes, training methods, and behaviour support services.

  • Our classes are designed for puppies aged 8 to 20 weeks at the start of the course. Starting learning with your puppy early with a fear free approach creates a lifelong bond and happy puppy.

  • To ensure personalised attention and a calm environment, class sizes are kept small. Usually no more than 6 puppies per group.

  • Click here for a full breakdown of what we aim to achieve with you and your puppy during the 6 week course.

  • You’ll need:

    • A well-fitted harness and lead

    • Plenty of small, tasty treats

    • A toy your puppy loves

    • A blanket or mat for them to rest on

    • Your puppy’s vaccination record

Don’t worry though, am email will be sent to you with all the details of what to bring to class!

  • Click here to see our venue! It’s a safe, secure environment ideal for learning and socialisation.

  • Each course runs for 6 weeks with one hour-long session per week.

  • Yes! It’s great when everyone involved in your puppy’s care attends. If you plan on bringing children, which is a great idea, I recommend no children under the age of 5. This is just to ensure we can keep classes calm and the adults can concentrate.

  • If you can’t attend, I’ll send you the class notes and exercises so you can practise at home. In some cases, we may be able to arrange a catch-up session.

Questions about Puppy classes?

  • Puppies usually have their first vaccine from 6 weeks old with the breeder. They then have their 2nd vaccine 2-4 weeks after this depending on the brand of vaccine used. To attend class, puppies must have had their 1st vaccine at least 1 week before class starts. For example, if you bought your puppy from a breeder who did not vaccine your puppy and you need to start their vaccines. Your puppy will have their first vaccine with you and then 1 week later can start class.

  • Yes, ideally a vet prescribed treatment is the most effective. We do not want to be spreading any fleas or diseases in class. All puppies should be up to date with flea and worming treatments to keep the class environment safe and healthy.

  • If your puppy is unwell, it’s best to skip the class and let me know. I’ll send you class notes and guidance so you can keep practising at home.

  • Please tell me before your first class. As a Veterinary Nurse, I can adapt exercises so your puppy can safely participate and enjoy the learning experience.

Questions about health and welfare?

  • Absolutely. All training is reward-based, science-backed methods that strengthen your bond and encourage your puppy to enjoy learning.

  • Yes, I will be adding a full page of my puppy recommendations!

  • A dog trainer focuses on teaching skills and manners. A clinical animal behaviourist has advanced academic and practical training to assess and treat emotional or behavioural problems (like anxiety, aggression, or fear). I’m currently training towards this qualification, so you’ll receive up-to-date, evidence-based advice.

  • I have been a registered veterinary nurse for 5+ years! Please go and read my about me page to hear how why I decided to start this journey! I’m also currently training to become a Clinical Animal Behaviourist with The Canine Behaviour College. Their course is a brand new behaviourist led course that is one of a kind and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in it.

  • You’ll benefit from a unique blend of veterinary, behavioural, and training expertise. I focus not just on teaching skills, but also on understanding how your puppy feels and learns.

Questions about our training philosophy?

  • Not yet. I am still learning the fundamental skills to work with specific behavioural concerns. I never want to take advantage of owners and say I am confident just yet. I may however need some volunteers in the future so keep an eye on my social media platforms if you would want some discounted sessions!

  • Absolutely. Many puppies feel unsure at first. I carefully manage introductions and create a calm, supportive environment so your puppy can build confidence at their own pace.

  • Yes! However puppy classes may not be the best place for your puppy if they are showing reactivity at this age. So how about you contact me and we can work through this together! I can advise whether puppy classes are suitable for your puppy.

Questions about behaviour and training support?

  • My background in veterinary nursing means I have a strong understanding of canine health, stress, and behaviour. I can recognise when a behavioural issue might have an underlying medical cause and work with your vet for the best outcome.

  • I’m happy to offer general wellness guidance on topics like diet, growth, and routine care. For specific medical questions or treatments, I’ll always recommend consulting your vet.

  • I am a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) and currently training to become a Clinical Animal Behaviourist through The Canine Behaviour College! I’m committed to ongoing professional development to provide up-to-date, compassionate care.

  • You’ll receive holistic, compassionate, and science-led support that considers your puppy’s emotional and physical health. You’ll learn not just what to train, but why helping you build a lasting bond based on trust and understanding is so important.
